Oral presentation

Infection strategy of Rhizobium rhizogenes plant pathogenic bacteria (rhizogenic bacteria) consists of incorporating a fragment of bacterial Ri plasmid into the genome of an infected plant cell. The expression of rol genes, present in transferred bacterial DNA, provokes the formation of numerous adventitious roots, so called “hairy roots”, at the infection site. Plants regenerated from hairy roots, called Ri plants, contain bacterial genes and display altered morphologic traits, as compared to the conventional plants. The project aims include developing a novel crop breeding technology using Rhizobium rhizogenes rhizogenic bacteria to improve root functions, increase drought tolerance and support sustainable crop production.
